I love Kolkata for its cheap living.I still remember the fresh vegetables in Lake Market. The vendors in Chowringhi Maidan selling all types of eatables.I used to enjoy the toasted bread with sugar and butter .The  leaf full of mixed fruits also was very nutritious.I liked the king sized Samosas. For buying dresses there is no better place like Hawkers Corners. How politely the shop keepers will welcome the customers and display their items. The funny part is that after selection you come to the bargaining part.Invariably you win over the sellers. The article has very nicely listed all types of snacks and sweets Bengal is famous for. There is no two opinion about the supremacy of Bengal Chai  in Khulhad,Samosas and Sweets .
But I feel sorry that nothing has been done to make the city of Kolkata look more prosperous.I was deeply touched by the abject poverty and pitiable state of the buildings , without any maintenance, as soon as  I entered  Howrah Bridge from Central Station.Still Kolkata is our spiritual capital.

taureandude,

Is your Zodiac sign is Taurus ?  I read Aditi Ray's comment. Yes- most  who grew up in Kolkata  in 50s and 60s would know "Alu Kabli " probably lot out to "Bhel Puri " which appeared in Lake area and Maidan - Bombay and Western India Influence.

I belong to the era - when "eating good food "  was important . Did any one notice the article
"I ,me and all that I flaunt "  which appeared in HT of June 24,2007 in Guest Column written by  Gautam Bhatia. Great article.

Unfortunately today we are more concerned about what we can flaunt. I know families who have cut down all the frills of good food at home, instead they would like to seen in high profile Restaurants.

Those who are still maintaining old Bengali tradition for their ownselves as well as for guests are being taken as dumbs and people try to get an invitation by praising "Boudi on her cooking and hospitality "

All that I am maitaining is family tradition. Some one asked you if Kolkata is still a slum city.
Itis unfortunate that Indians can not see what a French man saw in Calcutta/Kolkata.True Bengalis will remain Bengali  always. There good things about a Bengali which I would not shake off at any cost.

Best wishes.
