Hey that was a damn good blog!

I love Calcutta! Have stayed there when I was pretty young - Dad transferred there for a couple of years and all that :)))) And I love the rolls and 'puchkas!'

Your blog is a delicious reminded.

Even though I have been in Maharashtra for over five year - its still 'puchka' for me - NO to pani puri. :)))

Read your post about kolkata foods. it really took me back to my earler days that i spent in kolkata. I have been there for the last 25 years, a complete foodie, now settled in Chennai. i used to live on PUCHKAS, EGGROLLS, KOHUDI, SINGHADA AND MISTI. Your blog has ignited  my dead tastebuds. Time to make a trip to the City of Joy and live on the above mentioned food. Keep blogging.
cheers

Hi there,

I'm really impressed by the way you have captured the Bengali foodie's spirit in words.I am a Bengali, and a foodie not to mention....and I'm so proud that people from all over India love our cuisine so much.
Have you eaten at 'Bhojohori Manna' at Salt Lake?....Its a gr8 place..
I am in Noida now and really miss out on all those escapades like you mentioned, going to different stalls each day to try something new...
Really....Kolkata is enchanting !!!!!

taureandude23,

A nice blog from some one who has not been corrupted by  Maggi  ( any variety ) generation and also by Bengalis who take pride in telling that their (mostly mothers ) children do not like fish. They don't like also  but show no such reluctance in devouring 3 varieties of fish when invited for lunch  or dinner.

I was born in U.P and my younger brother was born in Orissa. We grew up in Orissa,U.P. and Bihar but my father made sure that we ate Bengali food and believe me those places are great for Bengali foodie. I lived in Bombay/Mumbai in excess of 22 years never had any regrets because we ate what we liked. what  we did not get Bombay ,I got it from  Calcutta/Kolkata and thanks to Airlines employees who kind of developed some pity for the food loving man. Large Patal, Baruipur Begun, Ganga Eelish, Tapshe, Paira Gur, Natun Gurer sandesh etc etc was part of my baggage.

I live in Nashik - no regrets. Large size Pabda @ Rs.100 per kg, Galda Chingri ( fresh water and from Godavari - not Lobsters) at Rs.250 350 per kg depending size. Large Tangra, Large Katla and Rui - plenty . People come and eat merrily and are surprise where I get so much of fish. when they insist on going to there homes for a meal - I go prepared to have some "Engo - Bango"  food - a desi food given a western touch with Health reason.

My wife cooks every thing with two teaspoon oil which we two eat for two days.We eat usually  4-5 kg of fish in 6 days (Mon- veg.) between two. I could not afford this if I lived in Kolkata.

If you are in Mumbai,my daughter told me "Howrah" - bengal Lodge is pretty good and not as pricy as Anjan Chatterjee joints. There is one lady in Chembur who sends "Dabba" with homely Bengali food including - "Luchi and Chholar Dal".  So a real foodie can find good food every where in the World. Try  Mahesh Lunch home .

God bless.
